Now and then, prolonged use of harmful products containing chemicals leads consumers to develop chronic health conditions. Among these, cancer is considered to be the most dangerous. For example, there’s an ingredient found in skincare products called triclosan that can lead to cancer when exposed to the mouth.
Also, hundreds of other ingredients in ‘seemingly safe’ products can cause a health crisis. Thankfully, consumers don’t stay quiet. They take the legal route to hold the manufacturers accountable for adding harmful ingredients and lying about them. However, some of these litigations are still ongoing or are yet to reach trial.
4 Pending Cancer-Related Lawsuits
In this blog, we’re listing four such pending cancer-related lawsuits.
#1. Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) Lawsuit
In 1970, the government asked firefighters to use a miracle fire extinguisher called AFFF. It was used to deal with dangerous fuel fires. This product worked wonders on Class B liquid fires because of its unique oxygen-depleting composition.
Unfortunately, it contained harmful per- and polyfluorinated substances, or PFAS. This compound is a forever chemical. That means PFAS won’t break down in nature or the human body.
It’s also carcinogenic. For decades, firefighters were exposed to the harmful effects of PFAS every time they used AFFF. That’s why many develop kidney, pancreatic, testicular, and breast cancer.
The worst part? TorHoerman Law states that the manufacturers (3M and DuPont) knew that PFAS was a part of AFFF's composition. However, they decided to keep quiet about the health effects and instead gathered profits from sales.
Soon, the victims heard about this and wanted justice. Their furiousness gave rise to the AFFF foam lawsuit. The plaintiffs wanted compensation for their suffering and medical bills. Currently, 7,738 of these lawsuits are pending.
#2. Talcum Powder Lawsuit
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) once created a soothing baby powder that became a household staple in America. This powder was claimed to be safe for babies to prevent diaper rash and relax their skin.
Little did parents know that there was asbestos-filled talcum lurking in this product. After decades of research, it was finally proven that talc-based products can lead to life-threatening illnesses.
The J&J baby powder was linked to cancer and other health conditions. The worst part is that the manufacturer knew about the asbestos content and its harmfulness.
Once the consumers learned about this, they filed a talcum powder lawsuit to hold J&J responsible for providing misleading information. The legal industry has found that 53,796 of these lawsuits are still pending, even though the number of cases is increasing.
#3. Roundup Lawsuit
Manufactured by Monsanto (owned by Bayer), Roundup was once a holy grail for gardeners, agricultural workers, landscapers, etc. This popular product could control weed growth by destroying the problem at its ‘literal’ roots.
However, everything changed when people started to complain about cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma caused by Roundup exposure. Drugwatch states that the presence of an active ingredient called glyphosate makes this weed killer a possible carcinogen.
Recent studies have also linked long-term Roundup exposure to cancer. The manufacturer disputes this claim and cites studies and research affirming its safety.
However, the affected individuals didn’t want to wait around for substantial proof. Their medical reports were enough for them to file a Roundup lawsuit to seek compensation. Even though 80% of these cases have been settled, there are still 4,281 pending lawsuits.
#4. Zantac Lawsuit
Zantac (distributed by Sanofi) was once used to treat and prevent heartburn symptoms. WebMD states that this occurs when the stomach produces too much acid, leading to indigestion. This medicine contained an active ingredient called ranitidine.
Unfortunately, the ranitidine used in Zantac was contaminated with N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Some studies have shown that NDMA ingestion and exposure can lead to prostate, stomach, and liver cancer.
That’s why victims who took Zantac and developed cancer filed lawsuits. The plaintiffs allege that the drug is defective and that the manufacturers failed to conduct proper safety testing. Hence, they wanted compensation for lost income, pain, medical bills, etc.
Reuters reported that Sanofi has agreed to settle 4,000 ongoing lawsuits against the discontinued Zantac medicine. However, this agreement still needs to be finalized by the court to settle the pending Zantac lawsuits.
In summary, consumers developed health issues without doing anything wrong. All they did was trust big corporations and use their products.
Courts dealing with pending cancer-related lawsuits caused by contaminated products should work faster to bring justice to the affected individuals. They have already spent thousands of dollars on cancer treatment, diagnosis, etc.
For instance, plaintiffs in the pending AFFF, talcum powder, Roundup, and Zantac lawsuits deserve justice. They should receive payouts to cover their medical bills and make up for the emotional damage as soon as possible.
